"Flow" is a 60-ft long ceramic mural created for the new Science Building at Keene State College. The mural is modeled on the actual shape of the Ashuelot River as it flows through the college campus and beyond. This river is a dynamic curvilinear form with tributary streams and oxbows that are very suggestive of life forms and physical processes. In addition to its central role in shaping the character of Keene's environment, the Ashuelot is a rich laboratory for a wide range of scientific studies. Within the "river of knowledge" the sequencing, pacing, and choice of visual elements in the glazed tiles are relevant to dynamics of flow and change studied in the Science Department's many disciplines. Throughout the "river bank" suggestive textures, mysterious forms, and impressions of actual and imaginary tools invite the viewer to question, examine, and discover meaning in "unknown territory".
